Our 3/4" thick box construction with full, 1/2" thick backs is held together with dado and
rabbet joinery. Why is this important? Over the years your house continues
to settle and shift, but our construction method keep precise spacing between
doors constant and our drawers operating smoothly. Few (if any) adjustments are
required over time.
Face Frame (Traditional) - Face frame cabinets have solid wood frames
installed onto the face of the box. Cabinet doors are hinged onto the frame. When
the doors lay on top of the face frame it is called overlay design. (See Sushi
Art for an example.) When the doors fit inside the frame it is called inset
design. (See The Freemont for an example.) For an example of inset design with a
beaded molding, see Windsor Hill.
In general, face
frame construction is considered to be stronger, because of the added frame,
and it is typically used for traditional styling. While it is stronger, it's a matter of diminishing returns when it comes to
our cabinets - thanks to our full 1/2" thick backs and joinery! And as far as being
limited to traditional looks, we again advise you to take a look at Sushi Art
as well as Oasis.
Frameless (Euro style) - With frameless cabinets, the facing is eliminated
and the doors attach directly to the box. Doors and drawers fully overlay the
edges of the box, with spacing between doors and drawers less than 1/8". It's a
crisp, clean look.
Also, because there is no face frame to intrude into the available space of the cabinet, the interior of our drawers is often wider and more useful in frameless construction. For a sleek, modern style using frameless construction, see Mojave. For a traditional style using frameless construction, see Regency Heritage.
